Projects

From The Maceys in California

Introduction

In spite of the small size of the apartment, the newness of it and that it is an apartment the opportunity to improve upon it are limited. We assume that the complex manager would not look kindly on moving walls.

Most of the effort that I plan to make is in my room.

To get serious, install the docker version of Openproject. For now, this will be the outline.

Software Changes

Upgrade Mediawiki to 1.42.x - latest

{{{2}}} Make all necessary backups
{{{2}}} Review extensions and install/update to current
{{{2}}} Make a snapshot
{{{2}}} Run the upgrade script
{{{2}}} Test new implementation
{{{2}}} Configure Traefik to point to the new wiki

Notes:

Best laid plans and all. It was good until running the upgrade script. I decided to start from a fresh install since the wiki isn't all that large. I was careful about picking extensions and then transferred the template library. There is probably a better way than moving them one by one.

Sticking points:

{{{2}}} Flightradar24 doesn't work in an iframe anymore

Implement Mediawiki page security

Basically, chose one that fits.

Access by category and group

PageOwnership is a permissions manager

Decided on PageOwnership.

{{{2}}} Install and configure
{{{2}}} Figure out how to use
{{{2}}} Split wiki to public and private

Chico Apartment

Generally pretty good, but there are some areas to improve.

{{{2}}} Update doorbell to current Google version from old nest

Lynn's Room

Infrastructure

There are several places that need to be cleaned up and improved. It has been a few years since this stuff went in and there have been changes. The overall goals are:

Repair ZimaCube

{{{2}}} Depends on parts arrival
{{{2}}} Disassemble Cube and replace parts
{{{2}}} Test with ZimaOS.

I really hoped that the supplied parts would have fixed the problem. After installing them, the system displayed the same problems as before. Fortunately, Icewhale replaced the unit and it worked. Continuing on.

{{{2}}} Test with ZimaOS. Run for a day or so and reboot occasionally
{{{2}}} Review fan noise and order quieter fans
{{{2}}} Install latest TrueNAS on Cube & Test

Upgrade ZimaCube

{{{2}}} Order updated fan kit from Zima
{{{2}}} Decide which fan kit to use
{{{2}}} Install fan kit
{{{2}}} Test cooling
{{{2}}} Install case fans

Migrate Data to Other Resources

{{{2}}} Migrate data from TR004 on PC to data_0 volume on qnap
{{{2}}} Move TR004 to Intel with 4x HDD

{{{2}}} Move data from standalone USB drives to truenas
{{{2}}} Review disks in the inventory and copy to Cube
{{{2}}} Build inventory list and recycle drives as appropriate
{{{2}}} Begin migration from Qnap to Cube. Setup rsync on cron to keep them in sync
{{{2}}} Install the Media Management utilities and Plex on the Cube
{{{2}}} Install each app and then migrate the databases from the docker versions
{{{2}}} Update Caddy and change port forwarding when it is working

Notes:

The TR004 would not provide individual drives to pve. I picked up an inexpensive disk array that would let me put those drives up and make them available to the Truenas VM.

Upgrade Proxmox

  • Preliminary

{{{2}}} Review the Proxmox upgrade document
{{{2}}} Do a full set of backups according to the upgrade document
{{{2}}} Do an alternate set of just the data areas

  • Upgrade hardware and Software

{{{2}}} Pull the machine and clean. Add a 2TB stick in the empty slot
{{{2}}} Upgrade the 1TB stick to a 2TB one
{{{2}}} Download and install the latest version of Proxmox
{{{2}}} Install the 14TB drives into the newly freed Qnap TR004 and attach the expansion to the Proxmox machine
{{{2}}} The TR004 didn't work. TR004 from Qnap not free yet
{{{2}}} Recreate the VMs and reload from backup

  • Pust Upgrade

{{{2}}} Create a new VM and install TrueNAS.. Create a disk pool from the Qnap moounted drives

Update Qnap

{{{2}}} Review all storage locations looking for duplicates.
{{{2}}} Move data as appropriate to the Cube and TrueNAS instance on Proxmox.
{{{2}}} Retire Expansion for now

Finish Migration Back to Lenovo Deskside

{{{2}}} Identify applications to move
{{{2}}} Move/reinstall applications
{{{2}}} Move data
{{{2}}} Reconfigure Dell box and reinsatll OS

Under Desk Cleanup

{{{2}}} Create and review wiring plan
{{{2}}} Pull out all hardware
{{{2}}} Move desk and clean and vacuum under it
{{{2}}} Clean window and sill
{{{2}}} Replace current switch with compact one from Bidwell (east switch)
{{{2}}} Rewire removing portable USB drives. Data has moved. Setup filesharing so that mounts are consistent
{{{2}}} Put the desk back and layout accordingly. Should desks be swapped?

West Stack Cleanup

{{{2}}} Finish armoire clean up
{{{2}}} Move desk back to have room to work
{{{2}}} Pull out all hardware
{{{2}}} Pull out armoire and shelving
{{{2}}} Replace the power strip
{{{2}}} Return armoire
{{{2}}} Have wood spacer made for white stack to physically support TiVo better
{{{2}}} Put the TV and Raspberry Pi back
{{{2}}} Review placement
{{{2}}} Retire iMac mini
{{{2}}} Prewire electrical and network
{{{2}}} Install the under desk switch (west switch)
{{{2}}} Put the shelves back
{{{2}}} Reinstall remaining hardware

Armoire Cleanup

{{{2}}} Pull drawers, one at a time, and decide what to do with stuff
{{{2}}} If it isn't being used it needs to go somewhere hint, hint
{{{2}}} The collection of old phones stays
{{{2}}} Review what is under the bed to see if consolidation is possible.
{{{2}}} The top shelving has been recently visited but needs more work

Nightstand and Electrical

As with many things, deciding to do something leads inevitably to doing other things. This is a perfect example. The cords under the bed are a mess and need to be reworked to just the large power strip. I need that for the Medtronic monitor and likely for a CPAP :-( The current inadequate cord plugs in behind the nightstand. The nightstand cannot be moved when full.

{{{2}}} Review boxes under the bed
{{{2}}} Empty file drawers and things on top
{{{2}}} Raise head of bed
{{{2}}} Make the necessary wiring changes
{{{2}}} Return stuff to top
{{{2}}} Reload drawers while culling extra papers

Closet

The goal would be to reduce, recycle and toss. Do I need 8 power bricks or 20 USB cables?

Photos

{{{2}}} Finish scanning slides
{{{2}}} Decide which ones can be tossed or rescanned at a higher resolution
{{{2}}} Review photo negatives and scan
{{{2}}} Categorize and organize
