Infocom was formed in 1979 people associated with MIT. The first three titles, the Zork trilogy is an adaptation of the Will Crowther's Adventure game. The company was acquired by Activision in 1986 and then lost autonomy in 1989. Activision itself was finally bought by Microsoft in 2023 after a long series of ownership and management changes. The story of the Infocom downward spiral after being acquired is a classic example of the acquiring company killing the goose that laid the golden egg. See the Wikipedia article below. Activision abandoned the Infocom trademark, and it is now owned by another game publisher.
